I am a BCBA and frequently watch your show. I was listening to Dr. Doreen speak on June 9th regarding the possible link between toxins, the redox reaction, and autism (at the 59 minute mark).  22:04 How Can I Help My Roommate with Autism?
I have a new roommate with autism. Extremely high functioning, however as an adult they need still a care taker in a sense. Cannot drive, really bad with money, super gullible...can't really cook. I've never lived with someone with autism, however my heart broke when they told me their story. I'm Caucasian, and they a person of color. Most of 2020 they were homeless and even caught COVID because of it. Couch surfing, they got sexually abuses by some they were staying with and others just took their social security money and EBT, all while calling them racial slurs to their face. Some people are truly disgusting. I have no interest in taking advantage of this human. They've been through enough and I certainly don't want to add to the list. The issue here is not only am I dealing with autism, I'm also dealing with PTSD from what they experienced in 2020. I'd like to help promote independence so one day they can live on their own, however also don't want to come off as cold, and I also don't want to coddle too much either. I'll happily take any advice I can get.

Evelyn Kung, the Clinical Systems Manager for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, joins us once again to discuss viewer questions. Check it out!

11:34 Reducing and Refraining Spitting: 3 year old non verbal son loves when you sing for him. He loves YouTube kids Cocomelon. He not given much screen time. When he does he spits on the iPad screen a lot. When you take it away from him and turn the show on TV he does the same thing. He does not always want chewy stixx or chewy necklace. He receives regular ABA, OT and speech services. Wondering if there other intervention procedures we could try to help him reduce or refrain from spitting?

17:48 Undesirable Tasks: Hello ladies.. how do I work on building the skill 'Sometimes I have to do things I don't want to do.' My 13 year old has it in his brain that except from school he doesn't need to do anything he doesn't like. For example, make his lunch, go outside and get fresh air, spend time with his family... We have let him have his way a few times and now he thinks that's how it always should be. He is very content sitting on the couch with his iPad. He is home schooled and doesn't have friends. He says no to almost every suggestion and we end up forcing him out of the house sometimes and he will say he had fun. We live in a beautiful state with lots to do!

29:51 Hand-Flapping: Hi. My son hand flaps only when he’s overly excited. What do I do for that?

32:39 Meltdowns: I have custody of my 11, almost 12, year old grandson. I'm having trouble helping him calm down when he's approaching meltdown. I see it coming and I start using my soft directive tone reminding him to breath and giving simple directions but he absolutely fights me and tells me he can't calm down. I sometimes walk away and give him space and time, or offer hugs but nothing is working. I try to catch it early but I'm failing. Any suggestions?

38:40 Meltdowns with Nonverbal Children: (In response to the answer to the previous question) What if child is nonverbal???

48:37 FREE IBT Courses Available Online: Parents: E-learning Parent Communication and Socialization + RBT 2.0 Training course free to parents on a case by case basis Educators: The Social Environment

51:55 Finger Sucking: How do it get my child to not suck his fingers ??. He is 8 years old and this is a health concern. He sucks fingers for comfort . He does not like chewy . He is nonverbal.

57:10 Schedule Fixation: My son get fixated on schedules. Even if he is doing what he likes outside home. If he has to be home at a certain time he wants to go home. How do I make him change his mind?

The Founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answers viewer questions about cognition, ADOS, insurance and much more!  Check it out!

14:22 What skills programs concentrate on cognition without being considered academic

21:36 here is a question, with all the scary events that are going on right now, how can people on the spectrum handle them and not get scared?

31:01 My child is diagnosed with ASD but the insurance denied abs after provided ADOS.

34:46 We are getting Neurological development evaluation what does something like this entail?

35:50 Hi! Have you had any experience with kiddos taking Namenda? His bio med doctor wants to put my son in Namenda to help with symptoms, especially hyperactivity. My son laughs excessively... it’s an escape behavior. He also laughs excessively when he’s nervous. I know it’s not yeast, we’ve tested him for yeast. It’s exhausting.

38:52 How do I make sure a school district removes a special needs teacher and aides and replaces them with someone who is educated and doesn't abuse our kids? Also, how do I present the NEED for cameras in our districts special needs classrooms?? ...I have 100 hours of audio...HORRIFIED by the first 5 minutes😵😖

39:50 Where do we find out about that therapy Shannon I use cbd oil it helps me alot I don't do rx meds. My insurance denied aba or anything for autism I was told speech therapy would be then they didn't pay it

44:13 They cannot help me with my child licking his hand.

46:14 Please state your credentials and provide links to the scholarly studies you speak of

49:53 Hello from St. Paul mn , my question is how safe it’s to take COVID vaccination when my son has challenges already, he’s severe autistic please I’m worried Need help,

Shannon and Dr. Doreen answer questions written in by viewers about autism recovery, quality ABA, diets and much more! Tune in and check it out!

6:42 Are Shannon or Dr. Doreen autistic or have autistic friends and family?
9:25 Do you believe a person with ASD can recover?
14:25 I believe that ABA therapy is extremely cruel.
19:17 I wish my very high functioning aspie 6 years old received ABA and learn all the skills now than later 🙈
20:39 hi Dr. Doreen here is a quickie, is there any other diets that you reccommend besides gf/cf?
26:02 My son is potty trained in pee, but I cannot get him to do #2 on the potty. Please help
28:54 Hello, my son communicates his need/want he is 41/2now. When will he start to communicate with us (randomly)
31:30 My grandson doesn’t eat and it’s very hard to put him to sleep
37:39 My son is 6. He’s been in ABA for 3 years and has made great progress but he’s so hyperactive. He does great in his center but so hyperactive at home and is now becoming defiant. I’m losing my mind.
42:19 My 8 y.o. is always hungry. She can eat 3 bowls of spaghetti. She also has issuea with heat. She cant stand being outaide when too hot. What ia this and what can i do?
44:26 What help is there for me? I just can’t deal with my own thoughts.
46:14 I need advice on how to handle my parents because they don’t trust me.
54:32 Our son is 4, and was diagnosed with ASD a year ago. We are currently living in a region with very poor education, and both my husband and I remember how autistic kids were treated when we were in school, not that long ago and not that far away. We are afraid he won't be able to reach his highest potential if we stay, or worse, for his education to make this brilliant kid believe he isn't good enough for anything. We have been talking about moving, but my parents are retired and take care of him while we work. They are fantastic, and he has a great relationship with them. We are afraid of him losing this connection and withdrawing. They cannot afford to move with us. I know everyone has a different case, and we must decide for ourselves, but has anyone here been faced with a similar choice? What did you decide, and how did it turn out? Thank you very much! Edit: We are thinking about moving overseas.
1:00:18 My 4 year old ASD son probably has visual slimming...looks at moving trees, light coming out of windows... his language skills are improving... please help on how to work on this

18:24 - Hi dr doreen, things are opening up across the country and the world, a lot of people are having a hard time with the new rules. Like no waiting inside an applebees for a table for example, any advice not just for myself but everyone.

35:00 - Hi -My question is regarding social awareness. My child is 22 months. He is verbal. However he doesn’t acknowledge his peers. It’s like they don’t exist! Does this getter with good quality ABA?

37:50 - My question from central Virginia is who is best quality ABA therapy or how can you look and what questions should I ask them

47:40 - When it comes to insurance and the assessments...it takes a long time depending on the child’s age so insurance won’t always pay for enough allotted time to assess. At least in my experience. I wish insurance gave more time.

50:50 - 20 hours at 2 years and 40 hours at 3 years prescribed?

In this episode of Ask Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders discusses speech in children with autism, sound therapy, repetitive movements and more. Check it out!

06:06 - Good morning Shannon and Dr. Doreen. My question is: Why  does my 7 year old son not spontaneously comment on anything or shows initiation to communicate? He only talks when He needs something. I feel defeated because I have seen kids around his age with years of therapy already having conversations and saying how they feel but my son is not there yet.
10:43 - Free Skills Lesson, How to get started training with ABA Services, for Educators, Free “Starting to Teach” Lesson
14:46 What is your opinion on Tomatis Method ( sound therapy) ?
22:31 - What is your opinion of stem cells as a treatment for autism?
24:13 - How would Dr. Doreen treat repetitive movements. its automatically reinforcing and hard for him to be aware of his movements. could you please tell us how you would reduce hand flapping behavior? its affecting his academics and he also has ADHD. Can you talk about continuing to follow a whole food diet and continuing organic and eating healthy.
35:41 - Do you find children diagnosed ASD has temperature regulation issues. I work with several individuals overheat easily and are constantly drinking water. Is there a condition for this? Other medical diagnoses have been ruled out such as diabetes and thyroid.
36:32 -  I just found out that UCSD has a video game that’s been FDA approved for ADHD treatment. Also helps some with autism.
 39:32 Do herbal remedies help?
40:51  - My oldest daughter turned 10 last week. She asked for a book on archaeology so that is what she got. Not an easy-to-read one like children's archaeology books, but really an overview of archaeology in more complex terms. It was a gamble, but she has been reading from it and from what I hear, she understands it as well. I should add, she is autistic. In her case, it makes it pretty tough to make social connections, but she is extra interested in subjects like math, history, and physics. My daughter hates fictional stories and thus she had a lot of trouble reading that book, which made the teacher believe she did well by taking the archaeology book away. Now, this happened more often. The teacher has taken away her math book, a card game she uses to practice image forming in her head (based on the memory palace technique, for those familiar with it), and she called my daughter childish for playing pokemon go. All things she likes to do, and I don't mind her doing them because she doesn't harm anyone with them. We had a talk about that with the school director as well, and it went fine for a while. But now with the archaeology book incident, the teacher decided that it was my fault. She came with all sorts of arguments aimed at how I should have pushed her to do things for her own age rather than let her find her own way. I have to say, it hurt me. She is my first daughter and I really try hard to do well, but I know that I make mistakes. Is this one of them? Am I really leaving her too free by letting her choose what she wants and likes?
47:44 - My son is 5 and I’m at a loss on how to change a particular behavior. He bangs his right hand on tables constantly and also claps his hands very hard, they sound like clap toys. It literally hurts my ears. The function is automatic. I’ve tried to replace the banging on the table with giving him bongs to bang on and he will only use it for a few seconds then goes right back to banging the table. Even worse than that is the clapping. I’m at a loss. I don’t know what to do and I’m going crazy. I’m so overwhelmed with all the noise and the pitch of the noise. I know automatic function is the hardest behavior to change. Any ideas? Thank you very much.
54:52 - How can I stop my child 10 from watching weird videos like kids tantruming when I ask him he says I want to see how they react so I don’t do that but that’s exactly what he does.

Don't miss this episode of Ask Dr. Doreen! The founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh answers questions about gut problems, Autism Recovery, Systematic Desensitization and more! Check it out!

Questions Answered:

06:32 - are gut problems prevalent for people like myself, I'm having a colonoscopy next month, I've heard all about gut biomes and stuff like that, I just want answers and should I refuse a colonoscopy.

13:00 - 3 year old grandson in Canada - Right now he is not verbal.  He repeats a few words for example apple or banana but not clearly but he tries sometimes.  It seems that he learns and thean he forgets. He has 9 hours ABA a week.  I believe it is not enough but in Canada they believe that he is still very young and doesn’t need more.  Recently he developed visual swimming.  He constantly looks at a window, daylight or lights.  Since he started doing this he doesn’t want to play with any toy.  I cannot catch his attention at all;  no eye contact, no play.

I hear you saying that your son recovered.  How did you do that?  How was your road to recovery?  Did he have severe autism?

Is there a way to reduce his visual stimming and making him more attentive?

24:12 – Overcoming challenging Behaviors Free on Skills for Parents and Teaching Communication Modules for Educators

28:40 - would you recommend putting a 7 year old with moderate autism that is functionally verbal in a General Ed. class for half of the day in school?

34:00 - how would Dr.

39:18 - How does one help with stimming from spitting? When younger was easier to replace with a harmonica and now older, what can i replace it with?

42:55 - He is spitting in sinks and outside. Is it a oral motor texture thing?

43:43 -  (Systematic Desensitization) Good afternoon I wrote in to Ms. Shannon my child's issues with dogs and no one can help she even gave me several resources that I tried Eagles couldn't help and autism speak I reached out several times the lady said she couldn't help and would try to get me resources but never did last week Noah also non verbal ran in front of a vehicle from dogs and my worst nightmare flashed before me .What is the best way to desensitized on my own not many resources in my area and just own my owner So do you have any special people that could help no family other than my other granddaughter that also has Autism? Thank you for any advice he wont go outside?

54:03 - When do kids with ASD give first words? because my brother who just turned 2 with ASD has 10 words

55:34 - Please I'd like to know more about eliminating or reducing scripting. My 6 year old son who is on the Autism spectrum scripts often and it gets in the way of therapy and general learning.

It's time for another episode of Ask Dr. Doreen! Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answers viewer questions about Potty Training, Apraxia and more! Check it out!

Questions Below:
11:38 -  Hi, We have been trying to potty train my son for couple for months now with help of ABA and now he can void when we take him but won't tell us when he has to go. He would have accidents if we don't take him. What will be your suggestion to get him to use toilet on his own or tell us when he needs to go so we can take him?1
24:41 - Hello ladies, I’m the mother of the 10yr old who had the dentist traumatic experience. Even though he’s having better days and less self harming. He has become very obsessed with me, wanting to be with Me constantly, sometimes I’ll be in the kitchen and he’ll come breathing really hard and holds on from my arm, then I need to stop what I’m doing for safety reasons of course, if I’m riding in the Passenger side, while my husband drives he wants me to sit in the back with him, when I sit in the bank he starts holding on to me, sometimes I can finish my hose chores because he needs me with him What can I do to help him with anxiety, that doesn’t require for me to be with him at all times? We finally have an appointment with the psychiatrist next Wednesday the 24th. Thanks in advance.
29:11 - When my child earns the iPad he watches the same video or weird videos his latest is Super nanny and he just repeats he tries to script it and use it into context it’s weird when I told my supervisor they said have him wear headphones🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️it’s his time. I pad is his highest reinforcer and if he is gonna watch something I don’t want him to learn bad behaviors. He stems on these videos so bad. I don’t think that was the best advice. Please help. The video says shut up, etc and he is saying that to adults. Please help.
35:12 - My 11 year old autistic son is obsessed with picking leaves, flowers, pulling full branches off of trees. How do we help end this behavior?
46:32 - Hello. Any tips on getting my shy, quiet, home schooled 7th grader to try new things? He has Autism and slow processing, but is on grade level. We are open to anything other than you tube videos. He says 'no' to pretty much anything and everything. No matter how short and effortless the activity is. He has no ideas of things he likes. We are desperate to expand his horizons! Thanks.
55:48 – How you can gain access to the following Free IBT Parent E-Learning Courses: “Overcoming Challenging Behaviors” and “Teaching Communication”
57:02 - Can the skills program help with apraxia of speech?
