Questions asked:
6:12 - I am having hard time getting my 2 year old evaluated can you give me any advice please
11:42 - My great grand twin girls were diagnosed with autism. Now they are six years old and now they are no longer on the spectrum. I always thought once on the spectrum you never came off.
30:00 - I need guidance as where to go now that we have a diagnosis for my 7 year old son. We do have school OT/ST and social skills. But I feel like I don’t even know what resources I should be seeking. We have started to look into CARD, but with recent events, we haven’t scheduled a consultation yet. We’re in San Antonio Tx
34:04 - My son 10 years old he doesn’t differentiate adult from child the way he talks so he tells me to shut up and tells his dad. Also a lot of NAS. Is there a program he has ABA.
36:05 – FREE IBT/Skills Lesson for this week, Parent School Readiness Skills and Educator Impact on the classroom
39:53 - I am trying to be like you Shannon but I feel like no one is on board from school to ABA I had hope from u and Dr. Doreen that he could recover but now we are playing catch up I am so sad 😢😢😢
47:16 - hey Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh quick question, how can you as a person on the spectrum handle change, changes make me anger easily, the break-up of daft punk almost made me go into complete meltdown, what should I do.
54:56 - My son has taught himself Mandarin Chinese and I have to say it is hindering his skill acquisition. I feel like he speaks it better than English sometimes.

In this episode of Ask Dr. Doreen, Shannon and the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answer viewer questions about anxiety, depression, teaching skills to our children on the autism spectrum and much, much more! Check it out! The Questions that shannon answered are below.

5:09 - I’m the mom with the son who had a traumatic experience at the dentist. It’s been so hard to make an appointment with a psychiatrist, everywhere it’s a waiting time, and he’s on Guanfacine at the moment

Not seeing a difference in his anxiety

12:37 - Are there any resources for families that have a 19 year old son with Autism that is becoming transgender? I have a student going through this, but unfortunately his family does not support it and refuses to talk about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

17:40 - Dr. Doreen, is there a resource for teenagers on the spectrum if they are at risk (depression, suicidal) that they can talk to?

22:50 – How can I get more Independent language? This morning we walked outside and he said brrr it’s cold. I want more please independent unit. His language is improving, I want to know what to do to encourage him to communicate.

26:51 - My 6 years old son knows how to count to 100. But how do I start to teaching him how to add/subtract ?

27:53 – FREE lesson this week on www.Skillsforautism.com “Parent School Readiness Skills”

30:30 – Is RBT for parents different from what the techs do?

31:05 – Can you let CARD parents know about the free skills lesson?

38:11 – What is the name of the free skills lesson this week for parents?

45:47 - Hi- I have questions about scripting. My son loves to use script from cartoons and kids movies. Sometimes it’s silly but we are more concerned about the script that sounds threatening. For example, “I will kill you for this” from the jungle book movie. “I will shoot you” from The secret life of pets. Now he uses those scripts when he is angry as well. I have heard 9 year old boy was charged with crime in GA for scripting from game “I will burn down school with fire bottles “. So I am extremely nervous and desperate who to ask for help. My son loves school but now I am so scared to send him to school. I can’t trust teacher that they will send my son to jail and charged with crime for scripting.

Check out Shannon Define Mand for the Jargon of the day before interviewing our favorite Special Education Lawyer, Bonnie Yates from Tollner Law Offices!

Questions answered:

37:17 - My son has ASD diagnosis, he is 5 and attended K online this year, we had completed our IEP before COVID and he had speech and OT services. It has been a nightmare. It took forever for them to figure out how to do speech on line and they never really figured out the OT. Now they are making recommendations for the new IEP and they are removing OT, their rationale is that he did okay without it! Please tell me this is as stupid as I think?

42:11 - We are starting the process of asking for comp ed this summer. Can you outline the steps of how we pursue this? My hope is to get them to pay for a 1:1 tutor for the summer. My fear is they will offer us summer school, in person with masks. My son is in 4th grade, he has missed so much academically this year and I am concerned that a summer of masks will not come close to getting him caught up.

45:30 - What are Bonnie’s thoughts on having our kids repeat a year due to COVID? I feel like this year is a waste and wonder if a do-over isn’t the best choice.

46:42 - Last week you talked about prior written notice. If we get prior written notice and disagree with the decision, what are my options?

51:15 – When we get a “Prior Written Notice” does it look like any other form of communication from the school or does it have “prior written notice” written somewhere on it?

52:28 – What do you do If the school gives your prior written notice and you do not agree with the actions that they are giving you notice of.

56:28 - How can I get the school to pay for Speech Therapist outside of school? We’ve been getting our speech this year online and it’s not getting it done. She needs in-person and the school won’t allow that.

Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders joins Shannon to answer questions written in by our viewers for a segment that we call Ask Dr. Doreen! On this episode, Dr. Doreen answers the following questions:

5:06 – My son is taking 1mg of Guanfacine at night, I haven't seen any difference in his anxiety or panic attacks and he is still harming himself. I've been trying very hard to make his days fun and positive but I just can't do it all day long, I have two other kids to attend to and I am the only one with him during the day because my husband has two jobs.

9:31 - From India. Sorry for the long question. My son just turned 4, was diagnosed with ASD at the age of 2.5 years. no siblings. We started 7.5 hours/week ABA, 2 hours/day neurotypical play school with a shadow and OT 2 hours/week. He was verbal at the time of diagnosis but it was mainly at tacting, low manding and low intraverbals. Since the COVID he is getting online ABA sessions 45min/day. 45min/day online class with neurotypicals from school and continuing the OT also RDI, once a week play therapy and I have also joined the skills developing software 2 months ago. His latest evaluation says-- ASD with no language impairment and intellectual impairment. However, his social skills especially with peers still is poor according to me. He also has obsession with animals which limits his conversational and social skills. Unless we are doing a structured activity like building legos--He always wants to talk about them, listen to animal sounds, do animal pretend plays, animal stories, type animal spellings etc. Please tell me how to work on this at home? will getting him into a 20-24 hours/week ABA program with one to one therapy help him in this and his deficits? We try to stimulate him as much as we can.. no intellectual impairment

24:25 – About Skills

34:12 - Good day to you. my son born with APGAR score of 9/10. he was normal child until 3 years old. all of sudden he has developed unusual behaviors like not sleeping, no appetite, hyperactive all happened in the same time. slowly he lost his speech. we were clueless. later he has been diagnosed with Autism with borderline. but within a year he got affected acutely. That period we put him in ABA 2.5 hours/week and OT 2.5 hours per week for 3 years. he has developed few behaviors in terms of OT. but his language skills which he had up to 3 years been totally lost.

51:10 – Hi are the any Apps that can help autistic child to talk?

54:41 – Hi I am in South Africa my question is do u have someone accessible here in South Africa we can talk to?

On this episode of Ask Dr. Doreen, the founder of the Center for Autism and Related Disorders answers viewer questions about ABA, regaining attention, depression, anxiety, medication and much more!

Questions Asked:

05:36 - Hi! My son is now 3...he does 12 hours of denver a week but it's not enough because he's nonverbal and moderate..now that's he's 3 well start more hours. ..like 20-30 a week of ABA...will he still have a chance to get out of the spectrum? Thank you

09:35 - How to deal with depression? My son autistic 10 years old and most of the time is depressed. How can I deal with this?

20:13 – Medication for depression and anxiety

23:34 - My 7 years old son clenchs his jaw like an underbite . He does this like it is his stimming. I keep telling him to close his mouth correctly and He does it but how to make him aware because his lips are getting dry and I imagine that can cause pain in his jaw.

27:36 - How can I deal with when my son is in his head to bring him back to interact with us . Telehealth is difficult some times. Regaining his attention. Any suggestions?

29:57 - What is y'alls thoughts on the covid vaccine, there is a lot of hesitancy including from my own parents, some due to the wakefield paper, some due to other things. Do y'all recommend it?

38:41 – Hello Ladies, I would like to ask for help with my son who just a few weeks ago started having intense behaviors. Which include doing rituals like tapping on things, going back to step on the floor, running towards the door of the house, running towards the kitchen wall, he is also crying out of nowhere, screaming, asking for help and saying things like “Don’t take me” and “I don’t want to die”. When my husband or myself try to stop him from doing some of the rituals he becomes aggressive towards us or himself. I’m not sure where all this behavior came from but it all started around Christmas time. Prior to the procedure the behavior starting he had a dental procedure to remove two baby teeth that were not coming out on their own and adult teeth were already coming in. The experience was traumatic. They had to strap him down because he was trying to hit. He had never had a procedure like that done before. The whole time from start to finish he cried, screamed and asked for help. It was the most traumatizing day I swear. I feel like all these behaviors started the day after the dentist. He has never had such rigid behavior before. He seems scared and super anxious it almost looks like he has panic attacks a few times a day. I asked him the other day after he had calmed down why he was squeezing his head. He replied that he heard a “Chin-Chin” Type of sound and that he wanted to touch his brain. He also added that he couldn’t put his body back together and that there were a lot of sick people dying. Please help. Help me, this is really terrible seeing him.
